On-device AI for Android

Before you install anything, check three numbers: Android 15 or later, at least 12 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of free internal storage. If your phone clears those gates, Zimmer for Android can run a compact open model on the handset instead of sending each conversation to a cloud model.

Check the phone before the promise

Zimmer for Android has a firm support floor: Android 15 or newer, 12 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of free internal storage before downloading the model. The app uses Gemma 4 E2B, whose download is approximately 2.58 GB. Storage beyond the download matters because Android, the app, attachments, and conversations all need room too.

Do not treat the model download size as the memory requirement. Storage holds the file while RAM holds the running model and the conversation state. A device advertised with 8 GB plus “virtual RAM” does not satisfy a real 12 GB physical-memory requirement. If the phone is unsupported, do not force an installation: instability and a hot, slow handset are not private-AI wins.

What actually runs on the handset

Zimmer for Android runs Gemma 4 E2B directly on the phone. During local use, prompts, conversations, and model inference remain on the handset. That is the defining boundary: the prompt is handled by a downloaded model, rather than travelling to a hosted model for every answer.

This is a mobile product, not the desktop application squeezed onto a smaller screen. It does not run the same model catalogue as Zimmer Desktop, host Zimmer Server, or connect to a Zimmer Server. Zimmer AI's wider product family runs open-weight models on hardware its user owns: a personal Mac or Windows computer for Desktop, a company-owned Apple-silicon server for teams, or a supported Android phone for this separate mobile assistant.

On-device language models are a real Android deployment pattern, not a marketing synonym for a protected cloud request. Google's official Gemma mobile documentation describes on-device text generation for tasks such as information retrieval, email drafting, and document summarisation. The useful test is still observable behaviour on your own phone.

A five-prompt field test for the first afternoon

A first session should test work you genuinely want to keep private. Use harmless sample material until you understand the controls, then compare the local answer with your normal assistant. The goal is not to make every score perfect; it is to discover whether the phone-sized model is useful enough for the tasks where its boundary matters.

Local phone AI, cloud AI, and desktop AI solve different jobs

The strongest choice depends on where the model runs, what the task needs, and which compromises you accept. A phone is convenient and private but tightly constrained. A personal computer has more room for model choice. A hosted frontier model trades local control for the highest capability and current online knowledge.

Offline has a precise boundary

Zimmer for Android can generate locally without internet once the app, account setup, and Gemma model download are complete. Internet is still required for sign-in, initial model downloads, licence verification, billing through Google Play, and account management. Saying “works offline” describes inference after setup; it does not mean the entire product lifecycle has no network dependency.

The cleanest check is airplane mode. Download the model, open an existing conversation, turn on airplane mode, and request a new answer. If generation succeeds, you have evidence for that workflow. Turn connectivity back on before expecting account, purchase, or licence actions to work.

The Google Play listing says data is not shared with third parties, while its Data safety panel also identifies categories that may be collected for account and commercial functions. Those statements are not contradictory: local conversation content and account or payment records occupy different systems. Review the current listing and privacy policy before using sensitive material.

The honest limits of a model that fits in your pocket

A compact on-device model cannot match Claude, GPT, or Gemini on the hardest reasoning, broad research, or up-to-the-minute facts. It has no automatic knowledge of today's news merely because the phone is online. Long conversations and large attachments also compete for limited memory, while sustained inference can consume battery and warm the device.

That does not make mobile local AI a failed miniature cloud service. Its useful jobs are different: private drafting, summarising text you provide, thinking through bounded questions, reorganising notes, and continuing a conversation where connectivity is unavailable. The smaller capability can be the right tool when the privacy and availability boundary is the requirement.

Use a hosted frontier model when a wrong answer would be costly, the problem needs difficult multi-step reasoning, or current web research is essential. Never rely on either a local or hosted model as the sole authority for medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical decisions.

Price and product boundary

Zimmer for Android includes a seven-day trial followed by an optional one-time Zimmer Lifetime purchase through Google Play. It is not a monthly subscription. The current price and regional availability are shown by Google Play at purchase time, so the listing—not a guide—is the authority for the amount you will pay.

The Android purchase applies to the Android app. It is not a Zimmer Server seat, does not turn the phone into a team server, and does not unlock a connection to one. The protected Zimmer mobile product page carries the current product overview.
